Stainless Steel Crown (SSC)

Stainless Steel Crowns (SSC)

Stainless Steel Crowns are necessary to restore a tooth which requires a structure a support the tooth. The tooth may have a severe chip, break, crack or damaged by a large cavity. In this case, a simple filling would not be sufficient to repair the problem and therefore the tooth must be covered by a crown. Some people refer to a Stainless Steel Crown as a "cap" or "silver cap".

Many insurances will not cover the cost of a tooth-colored crown for children on back teeth. When a child requires a crown on a front tooth, our office always works to accommodate the situation with a tooth-colored crown.

What to expect when your child has a Stainless Steel Crown.

A very common procedure, our practice has been applying stainless steel crowns for over 35 years. Your child will receive some local anesthetic to numb the area. This will keep him/her comfortable during the appointment.

Preparing for your child's visit.

It is best if you refrain from using words around your child that might cause unnecessary fear, such as "needle", "shot", "pull", "drill" or "hurt". The office makes a practice of using words that convey the same message, but are pleasant and non-frightening to the child.
